Sama Wins 2023 Business Intelligence Group Innovation Award

Sama, the leader in providing high-quality training data for ambitious AI, announced that it has won the 2023 Business Intelligence Group Innovation Award for its work with food waste reduction company Orbisk. This annual, global business awards program recognizes organizations, products, and people for bringing new ideas to life in innovative ways.

“Innovation is ‘business critical’ in today’s society,” said Maria Jimenez, chief operating officer of the Business Intelligence Group. “We are thrilled to honor Sama as they are leading by example and improving the lives of so many.”

Sama’s high-quality training data platform is trusted by the world’s most forward-looking organizations to develop accurate machine learning models. The company’s image, video and sensor data annotation and validation for machine learning algorithms are relied upon across industries, including food waste management.

Orbisk is a company on a mission to make the world’s food system more manageable, while working with an ethical AI supply chain. Orbisk gives foodservice providers better visibility into their food waste streams, empowering them to make data-informed decisions about their food supply chains. They partnered with Sama to label the data that fuels their AI-powered food waste monitoring solution, empowering chefs and restaurant managers with data-driven insights to help them shrink food waste by as much as 70%.

“We are an innovation-forward company, and the work we’ve done with Orbisk showcases the talent across the Sama team,” said Wendy Gonzalez, Sama CEO. “It’s gratifying to be recognized by the business leaders and executives who judge the BIG Innovation Awards.”

Providing high-quality labeled data to power Orbisk technology, Sama:

  • Accurately labeled hundreds of thousands of food images
  • Maintained open feedback loops to solve edge cases and account for new data sources
  • Helped streamline the data annotation process so customers receive accurate reports in a timely manner

Accurately labeled data provided by Sama powers Orbisk’s technology, giving foodservice providers readily available insight into which foods they are wasting most often, allowing them to better manage their budgets and waste levels. With this reduction in food waste comes significant cost savings and a measurable impact on the environment.

In its report “What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management,” World Bank predicted that more than three billion tons of food waste will be generated annually by 2050. The efforts and technology innovation from Orbisk and Sama are slowing that trajectory.
