“We believe the publication of this Gartner report as well as being included as a Representative Vendor reinforce the increasing importance for organizations to look inward, as well as outward, when protecting data.”

The global shift to remote work caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has created new challenges for security teams tasked with effectively monitoring employee activity while keeping company data and IP safe. The Code42 Incydr™ SaaS data risk detection and response solution helps solve this dilemma by enabling security teams to mitigate data exposure and file exfiltration without disrupting legitimate collaboration and work. Incydr wraps a layer of security around collaboration technologies, effectively monitors all file movement across the organization’s virtual ecosystem and alerts security teams of potential Insider Risks that can lead to data leaks or breaches. In its recent research report, Code42 substantiated just how significantly data leaks are growing with the shift to remote work during the past year – employees today are 85% more likely to leak files than they were pre-COVID, and 59% of IT security leaders expect Insider Risks to increase in the next two years.

“We’re living in a time where fundamental cultural changes have significantly reshaped workplaces. The stigma around remote work has dissipated, people are job hopping within the same industry and collaborative tools have allowed data to be highly portable. At the same time, business leaders want data to be fluid, yet they need to protect IP and trade secrets. The challenge is that security believes the only way to protect data on the move is to block collaboration and file sharing,” said Code42 president and CEO, Joe Payne. “To resolve this impasse, organizations need to adopt a new data security approach – Insider Risk Management – which wraps a layer of security around collaboration tech while allowing employees to share files more freely.”

Gartner notes, “While at first glance the insider threat challenge may seem like a subset of traditional attack detection and mitigation, one of the important differentiators is that insiders are in a position of trust. Frequently, insider threat challenges are due not to the use of hacking tools and techniques, but threat actors making use of privileges granted to them to perform their role.” In defining the three core mitigation goals for insider threats, Gartner says they are, “… intended to: deter the individuals from wanting to do it in the first place; detect the activity, and; disrupt the effort.” Notably, Gartner omitted “blocking” as a mitigation goal, which signals a significant sea change in data security.

“While the threat of malicious actors outside of the organization is well covered, our cloud-based, distributed work environments have made the risk of unintentional, insider risks more prevalent. In fact, our recent research validates that malicious insiders and careless employees are the two leading causes of data breaches, ahead of external threats and hackers,” added Mark Wojtasiak, VP and head of security product research for Code42. “We believe the publication of this Gartner report as well as being included as a Representative Vendor reinforce the increasing importance for organizations to look inward, as well as outward, when protecting data.”
