Exadata X8M World’s Fastest Database Machine By Oracle

Exadata X8M Offers 2.5X Performance Increase and 10X Lower Latency

Oracle has come up with the world’s fastest database machine that offers 2.5X performance increase and 10X lower latency at the same price as Exadata X8.

The recently launched Exadata DB Machine X8M brings together the power of Intel Optane DC persistent memory and 100-gigabit remote direct memory access (RDMA) over Converged Ethernet (RoCE). This will help get rid of storage issues and will vividly enhance performance for some of the most demanding workloads that include analytics, fraud detection, Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), IoT, and high-frequency trading. The machine helps customers perform existing tasks at a greater pace and also accelerates time-to-insight. In addition, X8M is also capable of offering deeper analyses even more frequently.

A Game Changer for Applications That Need Real-Time Access to Large Amounts of Data

Juan Loaiza, Executive Vice President, mission-critical database technologies at Oracle told that the company delivers in-memory performance with all the benefits of shared storage for both OLTP and analytics with the help of this latest machine. “Reducing response times by an order of magnitude using direct database access to shared persistent memory accelerates every OLTP application, and is a game-changer for applications that need real-time access to large amounts of data such as fraud detection and personalized shopping,” Juan added.

The performance of Oracle Exadata DB Machine keeps scaling as the platform grows. As a result, customers continue to enjoy performance benefits as workloads grow. Carl Olofson, Research Vice President, Data Management Software, IDC, quoted “Any and all customers who want to improve their Oracle Database performance need to immediately evaluate this new offering. It’s a serious game-changer.”

What’s in the Offering?

X8M Accesses Persistent Memory in Smart Storage Servers

Exadata X8M doesn’t access persistent memory using traditional IO protocols that need OS calls, storage network messages, context switches, and interrupts. Rather, it uses RDMA directly from the database to access it in smart storage servers, completely bypassing the IO, OS, and network software stacks. This allows for lower latency and higher throughput.

New Milestone in Storage Standards

A single rack Exadata Database Machine X8M delivers up to 2X the OLTP read IOPS, 3X the throughput, and 5X lower latency than shared storage systems with persistent memory such as a single rack of Dell EMC PowerMax 8000. It supports faster OLTP queries and greater throughput for analytics workloads.

Direct database access to shared persistent memory enhances the peak performance of Exadata X8M to 16 million SQL read IOPS, 2.5X greater than Oracle’s industry-leading Exadata X8.

Much Better Performance and Efficiency Than Azure and AWS

Exadata X8M leaves behind Amazon RDS storage for Oracle and Azure SQL Database Service storage by a drastic margin when it comes to delivering lower latency, more IOPS and capacity. This means the applications on X8M run dramatically fast and provide a large reduction in cost while running more databases using much less infrastructure.

Machine Learning from Oracle Autonomous Database

Exadata X8M has the same ML abilities as the Exadata X8, including Automatic Indexing. Oracle Autonomous Database makes the complete process is automatic and improves database performance. It also makes sure any manual tuning is not required.

In addition to the powerful features mentioned above, Oracle also announced the availability of its Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance X8M (ZDLRA). This appliance will use 100Gb RoCE for high throughput internal data transfers between compute and storage servers. Exadata and ZDLRA customers have the option to select any from RoCE or InfiniBand-based Engineered Systems.

The first database machine with integrated persistent memory and RoCE, the Oracle Exadata Database Machine X8M is already raising the bar higher and changing the dynamics of the database infrastructure market.
